Four teams in Bellingham Public Schools earned recognition as Academic State Champions in fall 2021. Sponsored by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) and the Gesa Credit Union, the scholastics awards program recognizes high school teams with the highest grade point averages (GPA). Fall sports include cross country, football, boys and girls soccer, slowpitch softball, girls swimming and diving, and volleyball. The GPAs are based on all non-freshman athletes on these teams.
The fall academic champions in the district are:
Bellingham High School Girls Swimming: Ella Bathum, Maggie Costello, Anna Palmer, Grace Schamber and Lily Skoczen (Coach Matt Buckmaster)
Sehome Slowpitch Softball: Maryellen Burfiend, Grace Haughness, Haley Henderson, Boston Jordan, Teya Larsen, Ruth Lewis, Lily Rasmussen, Mikayla Wefer, Kaylee Wilson and Faith Young (Coach Jim Emerson)
Squalicum Boys Cross Country: Chase Bartlett, Benjamin Latta, Noah Mason, Tyler Nielsen, Evan Rush, Gabriel Salomon, Wesley Sluys, Owen Voigt and Dirks Wright (Coach Erin Fraser Hoopes)
Squalicum Football: 54 players (Head Coach Nick Lucey)
“We are really proud of all of our student athletes for navigating a really challenging fall season and for showing up with positive energy and determination,” director of athletics and activities Laurel Peak said. “And it’s a significant accomplishment when athletes perform at high levels both in the classroom and on the field or track.”
Congratulations to all of our academic champions for being exceptional players and students.
