Bellingham Public Schools has two semifinalists and 13 commended students in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Competition. To qualify for the competition, students took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) during the 2018-19 school year.

Sehome High School students Olivia Geist and Jae Chan Lee are semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Semifinalists are the in top third of 50,000 high scorers and are designated on a state-representational basis. View requirements online. Finalists will be announced in winter 2020.

District commended students are Bellingham High School’s Brendan Gardner, Jonathan Henshaw, Julia Schwartz and Saunder VanWoerden; Sehome High School’s Anishka Duggal, Joyce Kim, Cecelia Hooper, Josie Marriner, Annika Morse, Jocelyn Richey and Julia Redstone (a recent transfer from Squalicum); and Squalicum High School’s Charlotte Bosche and Kyana Grayer. Commended students were also among the top 50,000 high scorers, but they no longer continue in the National Merit competition. They have received a letter of commendation for outstanding academics.
