Five local middle school students were sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) – Bellingham Branch to attend the summer 2019 Tech Trek STEM Camp hosted at Pacific Lutheran University.
The students were Angelica Khizhnyak and Sydney Wolfson of Kulshan Middle School, Liv Hampton and Julianna Schenkel of Shuksan Middle School, and Paige Leonard of Vista Middle School in Ferndale. The week-long camp included a host of STEM classes, labs and field trips and focused on professions in science, technology, engineering and math. The annual camp experience is an opportunity to bond with like-minded girls from around the state and to meet professional STEM women and instructors. The 2019 campers will share their summer experiences at the September Bellingham AAUW meeting.
Tech Trek is sponsored annually by AAUW. Potential seventh grade girls are nominated by their science or math teachers, complete an application which includes an essay about their interest in STEM. Following an interview process by AAUW members, campers are selected. Tech Trek campers in 2019 were supported by local contributions of the Bellingham Public School Foundation, Bellingham Central Lions Club and Wilson Engineering.
AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.
