At the 2019 Washington state solo/ensemble competition, Bellingham High School senior Carmen Souza took first place in the Mezzo Soprano category. This is the second year in a row that she has earned first place at the event. Carmen plans to attend Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in the fall. At the same competition, Sehome High School junior Jenny Cooper took second place in the Guitar category. The Washington Music Educator Association (WMEA) event is held annually every spring on the Central Washington University campus in Ellensburg, Wash.
Two other musicians from Bellingham High School also earned top honors in a composition contest sponsored by the Washington State Music Teachers Association (WSMTA). Bellingham senior Claire Campbell took first place in the Washington State Senior Composer category and her classmate, senior Aspen Buckingham, took second place in the same category. Last year, their honors were flipped, with Aspen winning first place and Claire winning second place in the same competition and category. As part of this contest, students who enter receive a page of feedback notes from a professional composer, a certificate and a small gift prize.
