Each year FuturesNW, a community-based non-profit, honors community members, school personnel and college/university staff/faculty who go the extra mile to make sure that all students can make their college dreams come true through their Education Heroes event. This year FuturesNW honored the Squalicum High School counseling team for their work with students.
The counseling team includes Kelly Boyer, Aramis Johnson, Debra Smith-Hicks and Steve Wiley.
The team’s nomination in part read: “This group is amazing! They don’t let anything deter them from supporting all students. Their emphasis is on how to make it possible for every single student to be safe, well supported and encouraged at every phase of their learning at Squalicum High School.”
The counselors were honored on Thursday, Nov. 9 along with a teacher from Ferndale High School and a faculty member from Whatcom Community College. The guest speaker for the evening was Jarod I. Tate, an Emmy award-winning composer. Mr. Tate has composed for movies and orchestras across the country.
FuturesNW is a 501c3 nonprofit focused on leveling the college playing field for low-income, often marginalized students.
