First graders pick up trash off of Little Squalicum Beach.

Earth Day this year brought community members together to clean up Little Squalicum Beach, including Bellingham Public Schools’ very own first graders from Birchwood Elementary. Together RE Sources for Sustainable Communities, Kiwanis Club and Congressman Rick Larsen dedicated efforts to pick up litter spread across Little Squalicum Beach.

The first grade students from Anne Franzmann and Valerie Smith’s classes recently earned their Green Classroom certification by participating in a sustainable schools program at RE Sources.

“I applaud these students for their commitment to service. They are the next generation of leaders we will depend on to protect our environment long into the future,” said Congressman Rick Larsen, the State Representative for Washington’s 2nd Congressional District.

Working industrially together, Larsen and first graders successfully removed several buckets of litter away from Little Squalicum Beach.
