Every January, high school musicians from Island, Skagit and Whatcom counties attend the San Juan Music Educators Solo and Ensemble contest, hosted at Bellingham High School. Solo/Ensemble is the regional competition for high school musicians and singers to compete at the State level.

The following students and ensembles in Bellingham Public Schools won first place in their category and will head to the State solo/ensemble competition in late April 2016 in Ellensburg, Wash.

From Bellingham High School: Rosamund Dyer, soprano; Lucy Evans, mezzo soprano; Molly Hortof, alto; Izaya Taylor, baritone; Showstoppers, large mixed vocal ensemble; The Altoids, women’s small vocal ensemble; Bellingham Women’s Ensemble, women’s large vocal ensemble; Maya Enstad, cello; Bellingham High Chamber Orchestra, large string ensemble; Glenna McGarity, flute; Adam Billings, oboe; Mary Clement, Tenor/Baritone Saxophone; Floboe, small woodwind ensemble; BHS Sax Section, large woodwind ensemble.

From Sehome High School: Mary From, violin; Juliet Hope, viola; Beethoven Trio, small string ensemble;  and Alex Harris, bassoon.

From Squalicum High School: Tristan Wine, bass vocals; Toby Bruce, multiple percussion; Spencer Thulin, mallets; and Squalicum Percussion Ensemble Quiet, large percussion ensemble.

  1. While Middle school students can’t compete in the state competition two middle school students from Bellingham were selected this year for the Jr. All State events.

    Emma Berreth was selected for the Jr. All State Treble Choir
    Leigh Hjelmseth was selected for flute in the Jr. All State Rainier Band

    Both students had to try out and be selected by judges.
