Janelle Karney, a fourth-grade teacher at Parkview Elementary, has been recognized for her encouragement and dedication to help her students. She inspires her class to read what interests them in order to help them form a connection with reading. Teachers around Whatcom County and the state have been focusing on reading instruction in early grades in order to prepare them for literature in later years.

“I just love that we are going back to really encouraging kids to fall in love with reading,” Karney said.
