Ben Mann works on art with students at Silver Beach Elementary.

Painting a collaborative mural for the school’s playground, Silver Beach Elementary students were visited by local artist, Ben Mann, to create a 15-piece mural themed: Nature in the Neighborhood. Instructing students on painting techniques, Mann kept the project open to students creativity and developed the theme from in class discussion with students. Working with students in the school’s annex, Mann said the building was unchanged from when he attended as an elementary student from 1970 to 1974.

Silver Beach Art Enrichment Coordinator, Ellen Sheen, primed the 4’x8′ hardi boards with black paint, and Mann used chalk to outline the design. Once the art boards are sealed and waterproofed the mural will be hung after spring break.

Each student also created individual paintings when Mann visited their classrooms to teach technique. The individual paintings will be showcased at the Children’s Art Walk.

Whatcom Talk covered Ben Mann’s work with Silver Beach students on June 9.
