Alderwood Elementary fourth graders sang environmental lyrics to the tune of “Happy” by Pharrell Williams to win a $900 grant from the National Park Trust for the “Kids in the Park” Day contest for the second year in a row. The “Kids in the Park” Day contest is a national contest that seeks to fund STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) field trips for low-income schools to a local park to encourage students to be active and experience their environment while developing stewardship skills. This $900 grant will be used to fund the Salish Sea Experience, a science-oriented field trip to Lime Kiln Point on San Juan Island in June 2015.
Ten Bellingham elementary schools will participate in the Salish Sea Experience this year. Other funds raised specifically for this trip were provided by school PTAs and grants to the Bellingham Public Schools Foundation from Whatcom Community Foundation, Rotary of Bellingham, Washington Foundation for the Environment, FLO-Analytics/Maul Foster & Algoni, Inc., NW Radiologists, All Ocean Services LLC, and several supportive individuals.
Congratulations to Alderwood fourth grade students and teachers; music teacher, Mona Dahl; and Salish Sea Experience Coordinator, Krista Gordon; for their successful grant-winning video. Our students are grateful for this engaging opportunity.
