Students rehearse for a state competition in the small string ensemble category.

Every January, high school musicians from Island, Skagit and Whatcom counties attend the San Juan Music Educators Solo and Ensemble contest, hosted at Bellingham High School. Solo/Ensemble is the regional competition for high school musicians and singers to compete at the State level.

The following students and ensembles in Bellingham Public Schools won first place in their category and will head to the State solo/ensemble competition in late April 2015:

From Bellingham High School: Maura Schaefer, soprano; Lucy Evans, mezzo soprano; Luke Robinson, bass; Luke Robinson and Maura Schaefer, small mixed vocal ensemble; Showstoppers, large mixed vocal ensemble; Maya Enstad, cello; The Unaccompanied Minors (Maya Enstad and Ian Slater), small string ensemble; Noah Thompson, trombone; Floboe, small woodwind ensemble; and Kyle House, snare drum.

From Sehome High School: Kyler Southcott, baritone; Adam Work, violin; Juliet Hope, viola; Sehome Chamber Orchestra, large string ensemble; Alex Harris, bassoon; Frank Youngblood, soprano/alto saxophone; Kenneth Brown, piano;  and Jemm Mikesell, guitar.

From Squalicum High School: Alex Mumford, oboe; Spencer Thulin, mallets; and Squalicum Percussion Ensemble II, small percussion ensemble.
