Bellingham United Debate Club starts the year off strong

The Bellingham United Debate Club swept Public Forum debate at Sedro-Woolley High School’s District 1 debate tournament on Nov. 3 and 4,  as well as scoring trophies in Policy and Lincoln/Douglas debate.

The Open Public Forum team of Drew Smith and Abel Stoyka, both Sehome juniors, took first place and in doing so, made their first bid for the state debate tournament. The Open Public Forum team of Spencer Rose and Tom Cassella, both Sehome juniors, earned third place.

“This was Tom’s first debate tournament and he did it in the open division!” said coach Laura Livingston. “Spencer and Tom were also the only team to beat Drew and Abel, who won the first place Open Public Forum trophy.”

The Novice Public Forum team of Paige Censale, Squalicum junior and Joey Jeffers, Bellingham sophomore, took home the first place trophy in that division.

In Policy debate, the team of Katie Clarke and Haley Reed, Sehome seniors, took second place and in Lincoln/Douglas debate, Pavan Parmar, Squalicum sophomore, took home third place. Open Lincoln/Douglas debater Jalen Tucknies, Squalicum sophomore, had a record of 4-2.

“Although Jalen didn’t win a trophy, his 4-2 record in his first year of Open Lincoln/Douglas debate against fierce opposition is still a significant accomplishment.” said Livingston. “Congrats to the Policy/LD teams for such a strong start! Onward to Snohomish and more trophies this weekend!”

The Bellingham United Debate Club will be competing in tournaments through February. In March, the state debate tournament takes place at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma.
