Middle School Students Attend Tech Trek Camp

Four seventh grade students from Bellingham Public Schools attended the annual Tech Trek Camp at Pacific Lutheran University held in July 2017. They are Mimi Baydek from Kulshan Middle School, and Riley Wolf, Charlie Marie Matthews, and Natasha Oster from Shuksan Middle School. The American Association of University Women (AAUW) sponsors the annual STEM summer camp which focuses on science, technology, engineering and math for girls going into eighth grade.

Every spring, seventh grade girls are nominated by their science or math teachers based on their academic work, as well as their interest and enthusiasm about STEM subjects. The girls then complete an application which includes an essay about their interest in STEM subjects. They are subsequently interviewed and selected by Bellingham (AAUW) members.

The cost for each camper is $900 and funds are raised through AAUW scholarship fundraisers, as well as generous donations from AAUW members, community members and local businesses.

The Tech Trek students will make a presentation about their experiences at the camp to members and guests at the regular monthly AAUW meeting in September.
