Shuksan Family Night Brings Community Organizations into School Event

Community in Action

Community organizations from across Bellingham and Whatcom County joined together at the Shuksan Community Family Night on March 8 at Shuksan Middle School.  Families from Shuksan Middle School and their feeder schools came together for an evening full of learning, fun and community building.

Highlights of the event included a free salmon dinner in Shuksan’s cafeteria courtesy of Lummi Island Wild.  Salmon filets were served with a citrus-herb cream sauce, vegetable rice pilaf, fresh Avenue Bread rolls and a salad bar. All evening community resource tables were available in the foyer and first floor hallway and workshops were available for parents and students.

The Community Family Night is a collaborative effort between Shuksan Middle School, Whatcom Family & Community Network, Communities in Schools, Whatcom County Health Department, the City of Bellingham, Whatcom Prevention Coalition, Western Washington University, Bellingham Police and Fire Departments, Young Kiwanis and Washington State Department of Social and Health Services.

“One of my greatest joys from the evening is watching families smile and laugh together,” says Shuksan assistant principal Shari Walsh and main coordinator of the event.

“Building a strong sense of community between families, schools and community partners is an important part of carrying out the mission and vision of The Bellingham Promise. I am proud to be a member of this wonderful community and I love that I get to play a small role in helping bring families together.”
