All Bellingham Public Schools are participating in the Sanitary Service Company’s award-winning, school-based composting program called Food to Flowers! Materials from each school, such as food scraps from cafeterias, are delivered for composting to Green Earth Technology (GET) in Lynden.

Bellingham Public Schools, “is one of the first school districts in the county (and state) to implement an organics collections program. This groundbreaking program is modeled after the successful Food to Flowers! program operating in San Francisco Public Schools,” according to SSC.

Rodd Pemble, Recycling Manger at SSC, estimates the program saves about $22,750 a year by decreasing garbage throughout the district.
